Sr. John Mary Baker, IHM, 94, died July 24. Born June 13, 1920, in Detroit, she was one of two daughters and four sons of John and Estelle (Crane) Baker. She attended St. Agnes Elementary School and High School in Detroit. She entered the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in 1939.Sr. Baker earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College and a master’s from the University of Notre Dame. She taught in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio, including St. Gregory, St. Charles and Holy Redeemer, Detroit; and St. Michael, Flint. In addition to teaching and administration, she served as adviser for school newspapers, student councils and the high schools’ National Honor Society. An excellent writer, Sr. Baker was awarded first place in Michigan for an original essay, “Why I Teach.”
In 1991, she ministered in social work, substitute teaching, instructor for homebound students in Ann Arbor and as a mentor at Marygrove College. She retired to the IHM Motherhouse in 2004 and entered the Health Care Center in 2008.
Sr. Baker is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, John, Joseph, Thomas and Francis; and her sister, Anne Offer.
Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated in the IHM Motherhouse Chapel on July 30. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery on the Motherhouse Campus.
