Sr. Judith Mary Singer, OP

Sr. Judith Mary Singer, formerly known as Joanne Singer, died April 18 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 82 and in the 63rd year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sr. Singer was born in Detroit to Ambrose and Ruth (Cumming) Singer. She graduated from Dominican High School in Detroit and received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Barry College (University) in Miami Shores, Fla., a Master of Science degree in chemistry from Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and a Doctor of Education degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La.

She spent 21 years ministering in education in Detroit, St. Charles, Ill.; Baton Rouge, La.; West Palm Beach, Fort Lauderdale and Miami Shores, Fla. For 10 of these years, she served at Congregation institutions: Dominican High School in Detroit, St. Dominic College in St. Charles, and Barry College (University) in Miami Shores. She was a parish minister/co-pastor for 11 years at Mother of Our Savior Parish in Detroit, and chaplain for seven years at Bon Secours Hospital in Gosse Pointe. Sr. Singer was an education and research specialist for three years at the Community Research Center in Baton Rouge. She was executive director of AIDS Alliance for Children for nine years in East Detroit and Eastpointe. Sr. Singer became a resident of the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in 2005.

Sr. Singer is survived by two brothers, Fr. Jerome Singer of Detroit and James Singer of Ocala, Fla. She was preceded in death by two aunts, Sr. John Thomas Singer and Sr. Bibiana Singer — both were Adrian Dominican Sisters.

Sr. Singer’s funeral Mass was offered in St. Catherine Chapel on April 21. Burial was in the congregation cemetery. Memorial gifts to Adrian Dominican Sisters, 1257 East Siena Heights Drive, Adrian, Michigan, 49221.
