Sr. Marie Travers, CSJ, died Aug. 28 in Kalamazoo. She was 94.
Born in Detroit July 30, 1916, the daughter of Joseph and Brigid (Diaraghi) Taveggia, she was a member of St. Margaret Mary Parish in Detroit at the time of her entrance into the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth on June 18, 1932.
She received the name Sr. Josine at her reception on Jan. 4, 1933, but later returned to the use of her baptismal name. She pronounced first vows on Jan. 7, 1935 and final vows on Jan. 7, 1938.
Sr. Travers earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Nazareth College and a Master of Arts degree in educational guidance from the University of Detroit. For 44 years she taught in several of the congregation’s schools, including St. Francis Home in Detroit, St. Benedict School in Highland Park, St. Ambrose School in Parchment and St. Gerard School in Lansing. For six years she served as principal at Immaculate Conception School in Three Rivers.
From 1980-1994 she served as curator of the SSJ History Room and congregational archives. Sr. Travers then retired from full-time work and assisted in meeting the needs of the Nazareth community in many and various ways.
“Sr. Marie’s beautiful smile, her generous self-giving spirit and her tremendous energy in service to others have been an inspiration to all of us,” said a statement from her congregation.
A funeral Mass was celebrated Sept. 1 in Holy Family Chapel, Nazareth, followed by interment in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Nazareth.
