Sr. Mary Celeste Lawler, OSM

Sr. Mary Celeste Lawler, a nun of the Servants of Mary who taught at Servite High School and St. Juliana in Detroit, died Jan. 6.

At 100 years old, Sr. Lawler enjoyed emailing family, friends and former students. She had a yearning to learn and kept up with current events by surfing the Web and reading the newspaper every day. She also followed Pope Francis using social media. She was an avid reader and sports fan of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, the Creighton Bluejays, the Detroit Tigers and the Detroit Lions. Sr. Lawler was an educator and has been described by her former students as “so much more than just a teacher. She truly cared about her students and in return they loved and respected her.”

Sr. Lawler was born July 20, 1913. She is preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Henry; and sister, Elizabeth. She is survived by many cousins.

A funeral Mass was celebrated Jan. 10 at Our Lady of Sorrows Convent in Omaha, Neb.
