Sr. Mary Susanne Wittwer, SC





Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Mary Susanne Wittwer died Thursday, Dec. 15 at the age of 87 at Mother Margaret Hall, the nursing facility of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati.

Born Susanne Wittwer on Dec. 7, 1924, in Detroit, she was the daughter of James B. Cavanaugh and Mary Brogan. Sr. Wittwer entered the Community in 1945. She was a Sister of Charity of Cincinnati for 66 years.

Sr. Wittwer earned the Bachelor of Arts in English from the College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati, in 1956 and the master’s degree in special education from Cardinal Stritch University, Milwaukee, in 1968. She taught at elementary schools in Maryland, Michigan, New Mexico, and Ohio. In the Archdiocese of Detroit, she taught at St. Leo, Detroit (1947-49) and Shrine of the Little Flower, Royal Oak (1955-56).

Following ministry in Catholic education, Sr. Wittwer retired in 1991 toRoyal Oak, Mich., to serve as a volunteer tutor at Little Flower School. She worked there for one year until she relocated to Mother Margaret Hall, the nursing facility of the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati, Mount St. Joseph, Ohio to serve in the Ministry of Prayer.

She is survived by her sister, Betty Lantz, and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Mary Catherine Sheets and Mary Jane Diola, and her brother James Cavanaugh.

Her funeral Mass was Dec. 20 at the Sisters of Charity of Cincinnati Motherhouse in Mount St. Joseph, Ohio. Burial was to be in the Sisters of Charity Cemetery.
