Sr. Melba Beine, OP, died on Feb. 27 at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 69 and in the 40th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.Sr. Beine was born in Iola, Kan., to Walter and Jeanette (Trusler) Beine. She received degrees in microbiology from the University of Kansas and Michigan State University, and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Maryland.
She worked at Mt. Clemens General Hospital in Mt. Clemens (1971-72) and at Hutzel Hospital in Detroit (1973-74) as a bacteriologist. She was a microbiologist at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor (1975-79) and in Arlington, Va. She served as president of the ASBPP (Association of Sister, Brother and Priest Physicians) from 2006-08.
Sr. Beine has been listed in “Best Doctors in America” since 2003 and in “Top Doctors of San Antonio” since 2009. She was voted a “Texas Super Doc” in 2013 from peer physician nominations.
Sr. Beine is survived by a sister, Caryl Hines of Topeka, Kan.
Burial will be in the congregation cemetery. Memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. March 11 in St. Catherine’s Chapel on the Motherhouse Campus in Adrian.
