Sr. Rosalyn (Benedictus) Hengstebeck, IHM, died Feb. 16 at the age of 89.
She was one of 11 children, five boys and six girls, born to Frank and Alice (Francis) Hengstebeck. She was born on Dec. 15, 1924, in Detroit and given the name Rosalyn. Sr. Hengstebeck attended St. Catherine Elementary and High Schools in Detroit. She became a member of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Monroe in 1942 and received the religious name Sr. Benedictus.
Sr. Hengstebeck earned a bachelor’s degree from Marygrove College and a master’s degree from the University of Michigan. She taught in formal education for 47 years at St. John, Monroe; St. Matthew and St. Cecilia, Detroit; St. Frederick, Pontiac; St. Mary, Mt. Morris; and at St. Michael and Luke Powers High School, Flint.
Sr. Hengstebeck is survived by her sisters, Bernice (Sr. Bernadette, Glenmary Home Missioners), Lorraine Dory and Joyce Van Blaricom, and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Francis, Robert, Richard, Theodore and Donald; and her sisters, Alice Cieslak and Germaine Bradke.
