Sr. Shirlee A. Hoski, SSJ-TOSF, died Oct. 13 at William Beaumont Hospital in Troy. She was 71, and had been a. Sister of Sr. Joseph-Third Order of St. Francis since 1958.
She was born Sept. 1, 1939, in Hamtramck to Raymond and Mary (Barczak) Hoski.
Sr. Hoski was a classically trained musician and a long-time teacher. She taught at several schools in Ohio before beginning her ministry in Michigan in 1969.
She began at St. Anastasia Parish in Troy, where she taught music education from 1969-72, worked in pastoral ministry from 1972-82, and was the music director from 1974-82.
She was then minister of music and worship coordinator at St. Clement Parish in Romeo 1982-84, and St. Ephrem Parish in Sterling Heights, 1984-87.
Sr. Hoski had been working as pastoral associate and music teacher at Holy Name Parish in Birmingham since 1988.
Sr. Hoski loved poetry, animals, and the Franciscan way of life. When speaking of all that she was involved with, she would say, “I love my life. It’s music, it’s God, it’s very enriching, and very full.” She celebrated her golden jubilee in 2009.
Sr. Hoski is survived by a brother, Gregory (Jayne); three sisters, Pamela (Ray) DeClerq, Karen (Art) Bucholtz and Mary Ann (Al) Kowalewski; as well as many nieces and nephews.
