Sr. Virginia Marie LaTourelle, OP

LaTourelleSr. Virginia Marie LaTourelle, formerly Sr. Agnes Ann LaTourelle, died at the Dominican Life Center in Adrian. She was 92 and in the 75th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sr. LaTourelle was born in Detroit to Harold and Angeline (Hoeykens) LaTourelle. She graduated from St. Joseph Academy in Adrian, and received degrees from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian.

Sr. LaTourelle spent 33 years ministering in elementary and secondary education in Michigan, Illinois and Ohio. In the Archdiocese of Detroit, Sr. LaTourelle taught at St. Mary, St. Clair (1972-73), and served on the staff at St. Lucy and St. Margaret Penafort Centers in St. Clair Shores (1973-75). Sr. LaTourelle was an adult outreach teacher at the Detroit Adult Education Center and the Cass Outreach Programs in Detroit (1975-92), and volunteered in community service in Fort Gratiot and Warren (1992-2001). Sr. LaTourelle worked in ceramics and was a master of researching and fashioning original statues of Dominican saints.

She is survived by nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two aunts, Sr. Bernard Marie LaTourelle and Sr. Ann James LaTourelle, both Adrian Dominican Sisters.

Rite of committal (burial) was July 26 in the Congregation cemetery. Funeral Mass was July 28 in St. Catherine Chapel.
