Detroit — The Kestrels of
St. Mary Catholic Central in Monroe captured the Class C state volleyball championship Nov. 20 in three sets against St. Louis High School.
SMCC won its crown convincingly, 25-14, 29-27 and 25-16. The match was played at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek.
The first set was anything but a runaway at first, with the score tied 10-10 before the Kestrels rallied for nine straight points.
St. Louis earned the largest lead of either team in the second set, scoring 4 out of the first 5 points. The Kestrels came back to tie the score at 9 apiece. The match was close the rest of the way and St. Louis even pulled ahead by two points late, taking a 21-19 point lead. Trailing 26-27, SMCC rallied for three straight on a kill by Megan Satterfield followed by two kills from Sarah Brent.
The Kestrels jumped to a 9-4 lead in the third set and never looked back.
Brent led the way for SMCC with 12 kills. Michelle DeMarco had 6. McKenzie Todd, Megan Satterfield an Sydney Maddux each added 5.
Bailey Windham had 18 assists and Kelsey Dimeff contributed 11.
