St. Mary’s, Divine Child boys bounced from basketball playoffs

Detroit -- The Catholic High School Boys Basketball Season is over.

The last two CHSL schools in the Michigan state tournament bowed out in the quarterfinals Tuesday night: Orchard Lake St. Mary’s, 60-49, to Bay City Western in Class A, and Dearborn Divine Child, 66-42, to Lansing Sexton in Class B.

The weather outside Davison High School gym was frightful, and it wasn’t much better inside for St. Mary’s, particularly in the second half.

The Eaglets raced to a 10-3 lead, but the Warriors scrambled to force a 20-20 tie at the half.

That’s when Western’s Matt Costello lived up to his billing as the 2011 Michigan Player of the Year by Gatorade and ESPN RISE magazine. The 6-foot-9 junior – who has already made a commitment to Michigan State University – scored seven quick points inside a minute to open the second half for a 27-20 lead to set the pace for the rest of the game.

He pumped in 16 of the Warriors’ 27 third-quarter points en route to a game-high 31.

St. Mary’s had no match for Western’s height and was relegated to a perimeter offense. Allen Robinson –who will be at Penn State University in the f all on a football scholarship – scored a team-high 19 points in his last prep basketball game.
