In fact, the Detroit-based Woodward Theological Society, which was founded last year, will kick off a lecture series on Saturday, May 7, by featuring Sacred Heart Major Seminary professor Mary Healy, Ph.D.
Healy’s lecture, titled “The Hermaneutic of Jesus,” will focus on looking at the Old Testament with a Christ-centered view, and will detail Christ’s own interpretation of Scripture in the Gospel of Mark.
The lecture series is meant to highlight local scholarship and spark theological discussions among Christians in the Detroit area.
The society also is spearheading a library initiative to make Christian texts available, and a series of interviews with theologians, philosophers and biblical scholars.
According to its co-founders, Mike Dagle and Dean Simmer, the Woodward Theological Society exists “to foster a culture of theological reflection that is academically rigorous and rooted in the life of the Church in metro Detroit.”
Healy isn’t the lone Catholic presence within the Woodward Theological Society. The group’s steering committee includes another Sacred Heart Major Seminary professor, Eduardo Echeverria, Ph.D.; and the librarian of Divine Child High School, Serve Danielson-Francois.
