The existence of Veritas Christi Catholic High School (“Back to School,” Aug. 21) is one of the reasons I remain a believer in Jesus Christ. Jesus came to help the weak, the poor, and the marginalized of His day, and in so doing, provided a model for us to follow. Sadly, the world, and even the Church He founded, which was supposed to continue His mission, has lost its focus, most egregiously in the area of educating “the least among us,” i.e. children with special needs.
The Catholic educational machine has essentially ignored these kids, giving preference instead to the “best and the brightest,” who, ironically, often graduate and eventually abandon the faith. Few honest thinking persons would deny that there are many things wrong with the world today and that this list grows daily. Catholic parents trying to educate their special-needs children need the Church now more than ever to assist them. Unfortunately, there are very few educational options available to them since the Church has been painfully slow to respond to this obvious need both modeled and mandated by Jesus Christ.
Fortunately, Veritas Christi Catholic High School exists; however, the founders are still without a building in which to boldly move forward with their mission to stand as a witness to the heart of the Gospel. I am thankful for the vision and the courage of the founders and the faithful who stand behind Veritas Christi Catholic High School in trying to help the vulnerable become victors in Jesus Christ.
