Winning Essay: “Life is a Gift”

Jamison Terbrack | The Michigan Catholic

My family saves lives. I am proud to know how sacred life is. Life is a gift and we should all do our part to make the most of ours and help others. My grandma was a foster mother along with having nine kids of her own, my parents are foster parents, and we have adopted a foster kid, too.

My grandma, Marguerite Terbrack, was a great woman. She knew how important life was and believed that everyone deserved a fair life. My grandma took care of one-hundred seventy-one kids in her life. Nine were her own and one-hundred sixty-two were foster children, and she loved them all equally! Although I am sad that she has passed away, I am glad to know that she is 100% a saint in Heaven with God.

My family is a foster family, and we also have helped raise foster babies. My mom and dad have had five children of their own, taken care of five foster kids, and adopted one child of God. Although sometimes my foster brothers and sisters could be annoying, they are and always will be part of my family. We may fight, but that is expected with siblings. My sister, Charlotte, is a gift and I am glad to know that we have her in our big loving family. Permanently.

Charlotte was adopted. At first I had no idea what adoption was, because I was about six when we adopted her. I love her though and am glad we have her. She has two sisters, who we also helped raise, before they were adopted by other loving people. My sister is still very much in touch with them though and I think that is huge. Sometimes I may tease Charlotte, because of her wild and crazy hair, she knows that I love her and she loves me too. We get along and we all love our sister as if she was born to our family.

I am glad to know how valuable life is. Life is a gift and we should all live life as if it is. God made us in his image and we need to know and act like he wanted. I think more people should be foster parents, because it shows how you value someone in a huge way. I am proud of my family and hope one day I can save many kid’s lives like my grandma did.
