Basilian fathers elect Detroit Catholic Central's former president as Superior General

DETROIT – Basilian Fr. John B. Huber, CSB, former principal and president of Detroit Catholic Central High School, was elected as the twenty-sixth Superior General of the Priests of the Congregation of Saint Basil on July 13, 2026, during their 2026 General Chapter.

The General Chapter is held every four years, and this year took place in King City, Ontario, during which Fr. Huber was elected along with the rest of the new General Council. 

Founded in France in 1822, the Congregation of St. Basil sponsors schools and parishes across the United States, Mexico, Canada and Columbia including Detroit Catholic Central. 

Fr. Huber served as principal of Catholic Central from 2010-2014 and as the school's president from 2014-2018. He has continued to serve on the school’s board. He has served as the Vicar General of the Congregation since 2022. 

In a statement on the school’s website, Catholic Central said that Fr. Huber’s election “carries special resonance” for their community. 

“Fr. Huber's Basilian ministry has been deeply intertwined with the school for more than a decade,” the statement continued. 

Also elected to the General Council:

  • Vicar General: Fr. Maurice Restivo, CSB - most recently Director of Novices in Bogotá, Colombia
  • Second Councilor: Fr. Pedro Mora, CSB - Pastor of Our Lady of Egypt Parish, Bogotá, Colombia
  • Third Councilor: Fr. Terence Kersch, CSB - most recently Director of Studies
  • Fourth Councilor: Fr. Paul English, CSB - St. Anne's Parish, Houston, Texas
