Sr. M. Angeline Hakel (Elizabeth Mary Jane), OSM, died March 2, 2026, at the age of 99.
She was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on February 2, 1927, the daughter of Adolph and Emma Hakel. Sr. Ange was one of eight children. Sister entered the Servants of Mary and made her profession in 1946. She spent over 60 years in education. During those years she was a teacher, librarian, liturgist, and resource aid. Sister taught in Massena, New York; Detroit, Michigan; Omaha, Nebraska; Anthon, Salix, and Sioux City, Iowa.
Upon “retiring,” Sr. Ange provided a number of Community Services for the Servants of Mary well into her 90s.
Sr. Ange was always ready to take on a challenge, whether in the classroom or as a liturgist. Retirement did not lessen her determination. She continued her passionate dedication to pro-life and other social justice issues. In 2025, Sr. Ange moved to Assisted Living and, for the first time in her 98 years, took on the challenges of apartment living. She mastered the computer to stay in touch with all those she loved, sending emails up until the last week of her life.
Sr. Ange will be remembered for her warm smile, deep and sincere interest in all those she met, and for her faithfulness and deep convictions.
Sr. Ange is survived by her sister Mary Ann Holman and many nieces and nephews, and her Servants of Mary sisters.
