Prep roundup: Fall sports action heats up

Detroit - As the fall sports season makes it to the midway point, here are some highlights from around the league:

FOOTBALL

Our Lady of the Lakes, Waterford, has bounced back from a tough early-season loss to St. Joe’s,

Cleveland. The Lakers posted their third consecutive win last week, 42-0, over St. Frances Cabrini, Allen Park. Anthony Caiozzo led Lakes with 156 rushing yards and Paul Goeddeke caught a pair of touchdown passes. The big game in the Intersectional II will likely come in week seven, when Lakes and Shrine, Royal Oak meet. Both teams are both 2-0 in the division and 3-1 overall.

In the Intersectional I, Bishop Foley, Madison Heights is tied with Loyola, Detroit at 2-0 in the division. The Ventures host Loyola this Friday. They’re rolling in on the heels of a big win over Cardinal Mooney, Marine City. In that game, Andrew Shango scored five touchdowns and quarterback Brad Schalk threw for four scores.

Someone’s unbeaten streak will end Sunday when Catholic Central, Novi hosts DeLaSalle, Warren. Both teams are perfect through four games, with CC rolling to a 35-0 win over Inkster and DeLaSalle crushing Clarke Road (Ontario) 46-6.

SOCCER

Brother Rice scored an impressive 3-0 win over DeLaSalle last week. Griffin MacAloon posted the shutout for the Warriors, aided by goals from Connor DeMars, Christopher Sesi and A.J. Washlewski.

VOLLEYBALL

Gabriel Richard, Riverview outlasted Lutheran North in a four-set victory. Kelsy Ferla (20 kills, four blocks, five aces) and Alex Repasky (15 kills, 12 aces) paced the Pioneers.

TENNIS

Catholic Central (Central Division) and Jewish Academy, West Bloomfield (AA Division) are the early leaders in the boys’ tennis standings.

SWIMMING

Key contests coming up next week include Mercy at Ladywood, Livonia; Notre Dame Prep at Marian; Cranbrook-Kingswood, Bloomfield Hills at Regina; Shrine at Bishop Foley.

HONORS

Betty Wroubel, longtime volleyball coach at Notre Dame Prep, Pontiac, was inducted into the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Sept. 19 at Central Michigan University. Also that day, former DeLaSalle athletic director Mike Jolly earned the group’s Distinguished Service Award.
