Under the direction of Susan Lindquist, the program fields three choirs, the Cathedral Descant /Training Choir, the Cathedral Children’s Choir, and the High School Schola Cantorum. In addition to singing Pontifical Liturgies at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, the choir has also performed at the Basilica of St. Anne de Detroit, Sacred Heart Major Seminary, Comerica Park, Little Ceasars Arena, the Henry Ford, and several Detroit area churches.
The mission of the Cathedral Choir Academy of Detroit is to provide an experience in which children/youth encounter Christ through sacred music, grow in faith and musical excellence, and witness to the Word Incarnate.
A veteran music educator and choral conductor, director Susan Lindquist commented, “Children never fail to recognize beauty, therefore it is our responsibility as parents and educators to provide the very best we can offer, particularly in matters of faith!” Lindquist went on to explain, "the power of music to draw children closer to our Lord is astounding. Witnessing kids grow in their understanding of our faith, particularly the Mass, is exhilarating,” she commented, adding “children are not the future Church, they are the young Church!”
Fr. J.J Mech, rector of the Cathedral the Most Blessed Sacrament and Director of Sacred Music, Dr. Horst Buchholz are both instrumental in supporting the program and are thrilled to see the choir’s steady growth. It’s such a good thing for all of us,” Fr. J.J. commented. “and it’s the best kept secret in the AOD!” Singing for the honor and glory of God, CCA choristers are joyfully unleashing the Gospel in southeastern Michigan and beyond.
